This site is dedicated to the many Channel Islanders, men and women who have served their country through the ages, in military or civil capacities.
(above) "Painting Battle of Jersey, The Death of Major Peirson, 6th January 1781" by J Singleton Copley 1781, Oil on Canvas - Original on view Tate Gallery, London.
Research into the recipients of the various medals and decorations offers the opportunity to reveal the stories of courage, service and self sacrifice of individuals that would otherwise have almost certainly been lost in the mists of time, the awards in reality act as windows to the past.
The Channel Islands consist of Jersey, Guernsey, Alderney, Sark & Herm. For the purpose of the site Channel Islanders are individuals either born within the Islands, of Channel Island parentage, have strong links or have contributed to Island life in some significant manner.
I will attempt to cover aspects of Channel Island medallic history not covered by other sources and will answer any queries where possible. Likewise I welcome any comments, additional information or corrections where applicable.
FIRST CHINA WAR 1839 - 1842
It is also my intention to provide a source for information on the First China or Opium War 1842 especially in respect of medals awarded to those members of the British and Indian Army & Navy for this neglected campaign that had far reaching effects to the present day.
This area is still under construction but will be developed time permitting into what I hope will be a useful source for researchers and collectors alike.
To introduce myself, my name is Stuart W. Elliott, born and resident in Jersey, Channel Islands having a life long interest in researching medals and decorations. I semi-retired from the police service in 2001 to pursue my interests as director/technical consultant of the Explosive Advisory & Disposal Ltd based in Jersey.
FOR SALE
Occasionally I will list medals surplus to my collection and for sale. I am also keen to purchase any China 1842 First Opium War medals for my personal collection.
Any questions or queries related to the content of this site are welcome.
